Carlos A. Becerra

Candidate for At-large Board of Director Member
Statement of Intent

The Hispanic Lobbyists Association continues to reach new heights and forge a strong brand for promoting diversity in the ranks of advocates in Washington; and in other pipelines (i.e. the Hill). It would be an honor to help build upon this foundation... in particular by exploring greater partnerships with universities throughout the country; and synchronizing/collaborating with other relevant initiatives (i.e. House Diversity Office, etc).

Carlos A. Becerra leads national advocacy for FIU, Miami’s public research university and a window into the future of higher education in the United States. With over 20 years of experience in policy development and intergovernmental collaboration, Becerra is a champion for urban public education and seeks to catalyze the economic transformation of Miami through people, policy, and partnerships.

In advancing FIU’s higher education and research priorities, Becerra has creatively adapted the university’s Congressional and federal agency approaches in a non-earmark era. In particular, he has helped position FIU as a research leader in STEM Education, Transportation Infrastructure and Resilient Coastal Communities. His advocacy efforts have helped secure funding for regional projects such as the UniversityCity innovation district and various innovative defense technologies.
